Do you need a contractor's license or an electrician's license to install a PV system?

Do you need a license to apply for rebates?

Comments

It varies from state to state.

For example in California, you can self install your own system as long as your installation adheres with local codes and permits. You can also apply for a rebate on your own and you don't need a license for that.

What state are you in?

Every state is different and many utilities / authorities  within states are different - for instance: The Energy Trust of Oregon states "Systems must be installed by a qualified Energy Trust solar trade ally contractor. Self-installed systems do not qualify."

Its always best to start at DSIRE and drill down into the published requirements of each incentive for your particular location and utility.

What if I used a contractor who let's me do some of the work (to his specifications) to reduce labor cost on a ground mounted installation? I worked as an electronics technician and I'm a ham radio operator. I've got lots of experience working with high voltage circuits and erecting antenna towers, so I'm confident I could do much of the work myself and leave the breaker panel hookup to him.  Would this arrangement disqualify me from the rebate?
